It’s no fun to always play by the rules when decorating, but I have several tried and true measurements that I refer back to again and again to help pull a room together. I’ve already shared my must-have measurements for hanging art and my tips for decorating living rooms and now we’re moving on to dining rooms. So if you’re wondering how high to hang a chandelier over your dining room table, the best size chairs to fit your table, or how large of a dining room rug to buy, these tips should help!
In this sunny breakfast room, designer Meg Braff brought in the greens of the garden for a soothing connection between indoors and outdoors. The lattice wallpaper, by Meg Braff Designs, camouflages the rooms tight quarters, while the apple-green molding, painted Sweet Daphne by Benjamin Moore, draws the eye up. The Serge Roche-style chairs are covered Bernard Thorp botanical-print linen.
Modern meets traditional in this ethereal space, where designer David Scott paired furnishings made by contemporary artisans, like the Zhipeng Tan table and chandelier by master glass artist Jeff Zimmerman, with 1790s chalk-painted French armchairs. Natural textures, such as the woven leather rug from Doris Leslie Blau and the lacquered raffia wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries ground the space, while neutral drapery fabric and trim from Holland & Sherry and a blue ceiling keeps the mood light and airy. The painting is by Larry Poons.

Whether hung side by side or split up to double the decor around your abode, this two-piece framed print set is always sure to draw the eye. Showcasing two different, but coordinating, painted scenes with pots filled with blooming florals, each showcases subdued neutral hues of green, brown and beige. Made in North America, this pair is printed on paper, then highlighted by a 23'' H x 11'' W x 0.75'' D frame.

Inspired by the lush landscape just outside the windows (which were salvaged from an old train depot!), the homeowner of this 105-year-old Victorian farmhouse filled the dining room with rustic wood elements and pops of green. The Beech wishbone chairs, which are lacquered in an apple green, pop against the large antique hutch that stores the homeowner's collection of copper Moscow mule mugs and green and white china. A pale pink Oriental rug with subtle hints of sky blue and chartreuse rounds out the mix.
