In this Miami dining room designed by Sid Bergamin, a bespoke tiled wall offers a graphic, glossy backdrop to a plush, tufted banquette covered in a rosette pattern from Pierre Frey. The dining table and chairs are from Jalan Jalan, and the chair upholstery is Raoul Textiles. The coral prints, a nod to the nearby ocean, are from Jalan Jalan, and the diaphanous drapery fabric is Ralph Lauren.
It’s no fun to always play by the rules when decorating, but I have several tried and true measurements that I refer back to again and again to help pull a room together. I’ve already shared my must-have measurements for hanging art and my tips for decorating living rooms and now we’re moving on to dining rooms. So if you’re wondering how high to hang a chandelier over your dining room table, the best size chairs to fit your table, or how large of a dining room rug to buy, these tips should help!

Now let’s get started.  This is the view standing in the foyer looking into our dining room.  I love the large window, it brings in a lot of natural light.  I designed the curtains to enhance the middle crescent.  I placed a stationary panel to each side of the window on a decorative drapery rod.   I didn’t want to hide the window with drapes or heavy curtains.

Remember Emily Gilmore’s painting of Richard from the Year in the Life episodes? Yup? Okay unless you’re really trying to make a statement that’s too big! Use your furniture for reference. If one area is your living room area and is anchored by a couch your piece of art shouldn’t be bigger than the couch. I’ve found that about 2/3 the length of the couch is the perfect size for a large piece of art. Go down in scale from there!
From setting the aesthetic of a room to showcasing your own personal taste, wall art offers a way to incorporate yourself into your home decor. Just take a look at this piece for example: Made in the USA by artist Ryan Fowler, this vintage advertisement features a fun picture of a cat with a tall glass of vino, awash in bold hues of green and black. Plus, it comes in a picture frame that arrives ready to hang with wall-mounting hardware included.
